Nutrition & healthy lifestyle
Which foods should I avoid?
Alcohol, raw or undercooked meat and eggs, unpasteurised milk, and very high-mercury fish.
There is no safe amount of alcohol in pregnancy, so avoid it completely. Avoid raw or runny eggs, raw or rare meat, unpasteurised (unboiled) milk and soft cheeses made from it, and liver in very large amounts.
Wash fruit and vegetables well, keep cooked and raw food separate, and limit caffeine to about two cups of coffee a day.
What you can do
- No alcohol at all during pregnancy
- Cook meat and eggs right through
- Boil unpasteurised milk before use
When to seek care
- Fever, vomiting and diarrhoea after eating
Fever with vomiting or diarrhoea in pregnancy should be checked at the clinic.
