What should I eat during pregnancy?
A balanced plate of starches, vegetables, protein and dairy, plus iron and folic acid supplements from your clinic.
You do not need to eat for two. Aim for variety: maize meal, bread, rice or potatoes for energy; beans, eggs, chicken, fish or meat for protein; vegetables and fruit daily; and milk, maas or yoghurt for calcium.
Iron-rich foods like beans, spinach, liver and red meat help prevent anaemia. Take the folic acid and iron your clinic gives you.
What you can do
- Include a protein and a vegetable at each meal
- Take your clinic supplements every day
- Choose affordable staples — beans, eggs, maas and seasonal vegetables
