Medicines & pregnancy

Can I take medicine during pregnancy?

Some medicines are safe and some are not — always check with your nurse, midwife, doctor or pharmacist first.

Never stop a chronic medicine (for example for epilepsy, HIV, high blood pressure, diabetes or TB) on your own — stopping can be more dangerous than continuing. Speak to your provider so they can adjust it safely.

Tell every health worker you see that you are pregnant, and check before using over-the-counter medicines, traditional medicines or herbal remedies.

What you can do
  • Bring all your medicines to your antenatal visit
  • Do not stop chronic medicine without advice
  • Check before using any herbal or traditional remedy
