Antenatal care

When should I start antenatal care?

As soon as you know you are pregnant — ideally before 12 weeks.

Booking early lets your nurse or midwife confirm how many weeks pregnant you are, do the first blood and urine tests, start folic acid and iron if needed, and pick up any risks early.

In South Africa you can book at your nearest clinic. Take your ID and any previous pregnancy records with you. If you are already past 12 weeks, still book now — it is never too late to start.

What you can do
  • Book at your nearest clinic as soon as you know
  • Take your ID and any old maternity records
  • Write down your last menstrual period date if you know it

If you are pregnant and have not booked yet, go to your clinic this week.
