Antenatal care

How often should I attend antenatal appointments?

Roughly monthly until 28 weeks, every two weeks until 36 weeks, then weekly until birth — more often if there are risks.

Each visit checks your blood pressure, urine, weight, the baby's growth and heartbeat, and how you are feeling. Problems like anaemia, high blood pressure and poor growth are usually silent, so visits matter even when you feel well.

If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, a multiple pregnancy or a previous complication, your provider will see you more often.

What you can do
  • Never skip a visit because you feel fine
  • Bring your maternity record every time
  • Write your questions down before you go
When to seek care
  • Missing visits when you have high blood pressure or diabetes
