When can I feel my baby move?

Usually between 18 and 22 weeks in a first pregnancy, and sometimes from 16 weeks if you have been pregnant before.

Early movements feel like bubbles or flutters and become stronger and more regular from about 24 to 28 weeks. From then on you should feel your baby move every day.

Get to know your baby's usual pattern. Any reduction in movement should be reported the same day — do not wait until your next appointment.

What you can do
  • Learn your baby's normal daily pattern
  • Lie on your side and focus if you are unsure
  • Report reduced movements the same day
When to seek care
  • Fewer movements than usual
  • No movements for several hours when you would normally feel them

If movements are reduced or absent, go to the hospital or clinic immediately for monitoring.
