Pregnancy & baby development
How does my baby develop during pregnancy?
Organs form in the first three months, growth and movement follow, and the last weeks are for weight, lungs and brain.
In the first trimester the heart, brain, spine and limbs form — this is when folic acid and avoiding alcohol matter most. In the second trimester your baby grows quickly, starts to move and can hear your voice.
In the third trimester your baby gains most of its weight, the lungs mature and the baby usually turns head-down for birth.
What you can do
- Take folic acid, especially in the first three months
- Attend your scans so growth can be checked
- Expect daily movement from about 24 weeks
