Exercise & pregnancy

Can I exercise during pregnancy?

Yes — for most women, about 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days is good for you and your baby.

Walking, swimming, stationary cycling, antenatal classes and gentle strength work are all suitable. Exercise helps with back pain, sleep, mood, blood sugar and blood pressure.

Stop and get checked if you have bleeding, leaking fluid, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, dizziness or regular painful contractions.

What you can do
  • Aim for about 30 minutes of moderate activity most days
  • You should still be able to talk while exercising
  • Drink water and avoid overheating
When to seek care
  • Bleeding or leaking fluid during exercise
  • Chest pain, severe breathlessness or fainting
  • Regular painful contractions

Stop exercising and be assessed the same day if you bleed, leak fluid, faint or have chest pain.
