What tests and scans happen during pregnancy?
Blood and urine tests at booking and through pregnancy, plus at least one ultrasound scan where available.
Blood tests cover haemoglobin, blood group and rhesus, HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B. Urine is checked for protein and sugar at every visit, and glucose testing is done where there is risk of diabetes.
An ultrasound confirms dates, the number of babies, the position of the placenta and the baby's growth. Ask what each result means and make sure it goes into your record.
What you can do
- Ask for your results and what they mean
- Make sure results are written in your maternity record
- Repeat tests are normal — they track change over time
