Pregnancy symptoms
Is nausea and vomiting normal?
Yes — it affects most women in the first months and usually improves by around 16 weeks.
Morning sickness can happen at any time of day. Small, frequent meals, dry starchy foods, ginger and avoiding strong smells all help. Keep sipping fluids through the day.
Severe vomiting where you cannot keep anything down, lose weight, or pass very little dark urine is called hyperemesis and needs treatment — sometimes a drip.
What you can do
- Eat something small before getting out of bed
- Sip fluids often rather than drinking a lot at once
- Ask your clinic about safe anti-nausea medicine
When to seek care
- Cannot keep fluids down for a day
- Passing very little or very dark urine
- Losing weight or feeling faint
If you cannot keep fluids down, go to the clinic the same day for treatment and fluids.
